How Far Back Does A NoFap Relapse Set Me?
Am I Back To Zero?

First you should know that there are not one single person on the whole planet who knows the exact answer to how far a relapse sets YOU back. They might know the rough answer when it comes to themselves, but we are all different so if someone claims to know the exact answer for you down to the day…

….run, and don't look back!

But don't despair, we can actually give some rough guidelines…

No one can say the exact number of days, however, I can go as far as to give some rough guidelines, based on my own reboot history and all the reboot friends I talked to online. Still, you might want to take it with a grain of salt.

To make this easier to grasp, we are going to use a fe examples here with different scenarios…

…stay with me here.

Here Comes Some Examples For You

Scenario 1

John has been fapping 4 times a week for 10 years, he is addicted to porn and now he decided to go on a reboot. He starts on a Monday and manages to go 10 days before relapsing. He felt he has been depriving himself so he really binges and watches porn for 8 hours with some fapping for a few hours as well.

RESULT:  Setback, full 10 days. John is definitely back to zero!

COMMENT: He is definitely back to zero as he didn't build up enough days to get some good healing going, and a 8 hour binge really takes its toll on the brain. Would it have been just a small peek, it would have been another thing, but 8 hour throws him right back to zero, no doubt.

Scenario 2

John, manages to rise again and this time he goes 13 days, but then he slips and edges to some Instagram models for about 3 minutes, he resets his counter and now he goes 27 days, again he slips an peeks at some porn clips this time, but only for 3 minutes or so, but he does masturbate and bust a nut.

RESULT: He is not back to zero. He was probably set back about 10-16 days

COMMENT: We have to remember where John came from in the first place, he came from a place of fapping to porn 4 times a week. Now he first went 13 days, had a very mild relapse, and then he went a full 27 day and then only a 3 minute relapse….

…this is progress, although he had a couple of slips. He probably managed to build more than he teared down. If he continues like this, he's reboot will be VERY long, but he could actually recover in the end even with relapses that frequently…

…it would perhaps take more than a year though, so it's definitely not ideal.

Scenario 3

Dan is also addicted to porn. He has been fapping for 20 years several times a week. He decides to start rebooting and right from the start he manages to stay clean for 180 days, (hey, congrats Dan), then one Saturday he is overwhelmed by loneliness and breaks…

…the result is a 3 hour long fapping session to some very nasty porn he finds online.

RESULT: Set back about 12-18 days

COMMENT: The relapse was pretty bade with a binge taking 3 hours. However, Dan  had come very far, and his brain had really healed well during his 180 day streak. So well that it was able to take it without too big of a setback.

Now, had Dan continued to binge the next few days then he would have ben set back WAY more. Luckily he got right back up and continued, It would have been counterproductive to reset the counter, even though he really relapsed bad.

Scenario 4

Eric is also addicted to porn, he has been watching porn for about 8 years. When he starts rebooting he manages to pull of streaks that looks like this…

  • 23 days – relapse
  • 33 days – relapse
  • 14 days – relapse
  • 45 days – relapse
  • 63 days – relapse
  • 22 days – relapse
  • 11 days – relapse
  • 43 days – relapse
  • 55 days – relapse
  • 55 days – relapse
  • 43 days – relapse

All his relapses are short slips, and never more than 6-7 minutes long, but in some of them he does masturbate and ejaculate.

RESULT: He is not back to Zero.

COMMENT: It becomes very difficult to try to estimate “on what day” he might be now after the last relapse (Mind you that the reward circuitry in the brain does not count days anyway)  He has definitely built more then he has teared down though, and he has had many decent streaks there, some of them over 50 days. And his relapses were not super destructive.

Yeah the “net result” is, he is definitely rebooting. I would go as far as to say that after all those streaks and even though he just relapsed on day 43,  he might actually be somewhere between day 25-45. Sounds strange? Not at all, remember now, he had 10 pretty decent streaks before the last one.

Scenario 5

Peter is not addicted to porn, but he likes to do NoFap challenges because he notice increased confidence, energy, motivation and also increased attention from girls.

He goes 11 days and has just started to feel really good, then he fapps 3 times on Thursday.

RESULT: He is back to zero!

COMMENT: In this scenario it is a bit different because he is not trying to heal his brain. He is just after the interesting biological effects from semen retention.

Well, after the seventh day testosterone spike the androgen receptors really start to become more dense, and  more sensitive to testosterone, but with those three orgasms he had, he is pretty much back to zero.

Is relapsing really bad on NoFap?

Remember now, zero is not some horrible place to be for a person who is not addicted to porn. In fact it is the status quo where most people actually are. However, if he really wants those extra “powers” then day zero is not where he should be.

He should be aiming to spend time between day 7 and day 60 and then perhaps have one release with a real life woman.

That one release would not set him back to zero, it would perhaps set him back to day 20-30 something, which is a very good place to be for a non porn addict.

Longer is not always better, when it comes to non addicts

That reset with the woman was also very healthy for him because longer is not always better even on semen retention. Just like with everything else, in nature, it is designed to work best in cycles.

When it comes to semen retention I believe that cycles between 30-60 days is the optimal length. I will talk more about that in another article.

(and by mentioning a cycle of 30-60 days we are not talking about a porn reboot here, but now we are talking from a perspective of someone who is not addicted to online adult entertainment, or someone who has recovered)

Final Words

Remember to take all the numbers with a grain of salt as your mileage may vary. We are all different and it is very difficult to try to answer things like this…

…but hey, I did my best…

…I gave you some rough guidelines form what I have experienced and learned during all my research and during my own rebooting, so I hope you found this short article at least somewhat informative.
