How To Get Rid Of Urges To Watch Porn (Try These Tips)

How To Get Rid Of Urges To Watch Porn

So, you are trying to stop watching porn, but you're urges are very stubborn and often make you relapse.

And now you are wondering if there's anyway of getting rid of porn urges.

Well, let's talk about it…

…here's a few things for you to consider…

How to get rid of urges to watch porn…

Call a friend…

The next time you're having really nasty urges, try calling a friend. Or better yet, go hang out with him or her.

It's amazing how well this work!

Unless you're friend is someone you're sexually attracted to it really makes you forget about the urges for a few hours, and oftentimes for the rest of the day.

Try this…

Before you call or visit your friend, think…

“Today I'm going to be a good friend and really be a good listener. I'm going to listen carefully what my friend says, mentally put myself in his situation and really try to understand him. Let's see if I can learn something too.”

If you go visit your friend with that mindset, you will completely destroy any urges, at least in the moment of socializing.

Trying to be a good listener and trying to learn something will open your mind and put you in a different mindset, making cravings for instant gratification a non issue.

Take a cold shower…

This one works even better than physical exercise.

Nothing shakes you up and changes your mental state as much as jumping into a ice cold shower.

Have you tried it?

No?

Well, if not then you're in for a treat because they make you feel amazing.

However, a word of warning, they are very painful in the moment. That amazing feeling is nowhere to be found right then and there, in the shower. It's when you turn off the water and you're done that you feel like a winner.

By the way, cold showers also instantly raise dopamine, and one of the biggest reason for getting porn cravings in the first place is because of low dopamine levels.

Figure out what need you are trying to fill with porn…

I realize that this might sound silly to some people.

As in, “what do you mean by “need?” It's horniness…or my sexual need, of course”

Yeah, sometimes, sure, but not so fast here!

You see, so many people are using porn as a way tro try to escape from something. In fact, I would estimate, from what I have seen after having been involved in the porn addiction community for 10 years, that more than 50% of people who are trying to quit are using porn as an escapism.

Here are some common things I have seen…

  • A lot of guys are longing for connection…
  • Some try to escape stress and anxiety…
  • Some are lonely and have social anxiety, thus they can't reach out to anyone and feel like they are trapped…
  • Some try to run away from depression…
  • Some are lacking purpose in life…
  • Some are looking for significance…
  • Some are looking for variety…

Escaping to porn to try to fill a need will, in the long run, always lead to even stronger cravings than for people who use it just because they're horny.

If you're now starting to feel that you could be on to something here, then take a look at this video below. You might just get the biggest “aha-moment” of your life…

Listen to the video above and how the 6 human needs can make us choose different ways to try to meet those needs (pron being one way).

The six human needs…

  • Certainty – Uncertainty / variety
  • Significance – Connection and love
  • Growth – Contribution

Check this out…

If you need help with this, I highly recommend you read about a good course for overcoming porn addiction here as  the core of that course is built on how to pinpoint what need porn is trying to meet for you, and then finding other more productive ways, for you to meet that need instead.

Don't resist the urges…

Another thing you need to know about porn urges is that you should never try to resist them. And by resist I men trying to force them to go away by mentally shouting something like “no no no, this is so bad, go away go away!”

Why?

Well, because whenever you resist a craving, you may get rid of it for a while, but it always comes back, and not only that….

…when it comes back, it's actually stronger than before you pushed it away.

This is a psychological phenomenon called “the ironic rebound effect”.

It's the same with any powerful thought or emotion. If you push them away, they will all boomerang back, now being even more powerful.

Surf the urges instead…

Instead of trying to resist the urges, you should surf them.

Surfing the urges basically mean…

  • Just notice the craving without judgement
  • Don't resist it
  • But also don't feed it (not trying to draw lust from it)
  • Where in your body can you feel it?
  • Let that feeling wash over you (again without judgement or resistance)
  • Rid on top of that feeling, like a surfer rides on a wave in the ocean
  • After a few minutes, sometimes even seconds, the “wave” will die out

I realize this can be a bit tricky to grasp  from just reading it in just text form.

So, take a look at a video I made a while back to get a better understanding of the whole concept.

Final words…

I hope you found the article helpful.

Remember, having urges does not mean that there's something wrong with you. You're dopamine system has just been hijacked by all those super stimulating adult sites.

After about 30 days, most people notice how the urges become weaker and less persistent.

However, I'm not going to lie, they will most likely continue to pop from time to time for months, and sometimes even years, after you last session.

Let the fact that they do become weaker while you become stronger comfort you, and just keep trudging forward on your NoFap road.

It's a wonderful journey.
